Description

Bone meal is a slow-release, 100% organic fertilizer made from crushed animal bones. It is highly prized in agriculture as a premier natural source of phosphorus (typically 15% to 22% P) and calcium (around 15% to 20% Ca), which are essential for strong root development and high-quality fruit and flower production.

Benefits in Agriculture

  • Exceptional Root Development: The high phosphorus content stimulates robust root growth, helping young plants establish themselves quickly and absorb water more efficiently.
  • Abundant Flowering and Fruiting: Phosphorus is the primary nutrient responsible for blossom production, leading to higher yields in fruit-bearing crops and vibrant blooms in flowers.
  • Prevents Nutrient Deficiencies: The rich calcium content strengthens plant cell walls, effectively preventing common physiological disorders like blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers.
  • Safe, Slow-Release Feed: It breaks down gradually over 2 to 4 months through soil microbial activity, ensuring a steady nutrient supply without the risk of chemical leaching or root burn.

Agricultural Uses

  • Root Crops and Bulbs: It is ideal for carrots, onions, garlic, and flower bulbs, which rely heavily on phosphorus to develop thick, healthy roots.
  • Transplanting: Mixing it into the planting hole of young seedlings or fruit trees reduces transplant shock and accelerates establishment.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Plants: It serves as an excellent seasonal supplement for tomatoes, peppers, berries, roses, and ornamental shrubs.

Directions for Use

  • Soil Requirements: Bone meal requires a soil pH below 7.0 to break down effectively. If your soil is highly alkaline (above pH 7.0), the phosphorus will lock up and become unavailable to the plant.
  • Soil Mixing (Pre-Planting): For new garden beds or individual planting holes, blend the meal thoroughly with the soil. A standard rate is roughly 50 g to 100 g per square meter, or 1 to 2 tablespoons directly in the planting hole.
  • Top Dressing (Established Plants): Sprinkle the meal evenly around the drip line of the plant, scratch it gently into the top inch of the soil, and water the area deeply to initiate microbial breakdown.
  • Pet Safety Note: Because it is made from animal bones, it has a strong scent that can attract dogs or wild animals. Always mix it thoroughly into the soil and cover it well to prevent animals from digging it up.
