Description

Blood meal is a fast-acting, 100% organic fertilizer made from dried animal blood. It is highly valued in agriculture as a potent source of readily available nitrogen (typically 12% to 14% N), making it an excellent remedy for nitrogen-deficient soils.

Benefits in Agriculture

  • Rapid Nitrogen Boost: Unlike horn meal, blood meal dissolves and breaks down quickly. It provides an immediate nutrient spike that visibly greens up stunted or yellowing plants within days.
  • Natural Pest Deterrent: The distinct scent of dried blood naturally repels common garden herbivores like deer, rabbits, and squirrels.
  • Corrects Soil Chlorosis: It effectively cures iron and nitrogen deficiencies, which are the leading causes of yellowing leaves (chlorosis).
  • Acidifies the Soil: Regular application can slightly lower soil pH. This makes it beneficial for plants that thrive in acidic environments.

Agricultural Uses

  • Heavy Feeders: It is ideal for leafy greens, corn, cruciferous vegetables, and tomatoes during their early vegetative growth stage.
  • Sickly Plant Recovery: It serves as a quick first-aid treatment for crops showing severe signs of nitrogen deficiency.
  • Compost Activator: Adding a small amount to your compost pile provides the rapid nitrogen burst needed to heat up the pile and accelerate decomposition.

Directions for Use

  • Application Rate: Because it is highly concentrated, use it sparingly. A standard baseline is roughly 25 g to 50 g per square meter, or 1 tablespoon per plant.
  • Careful Placement: Always mix it thoroughly into the topsoil or bury it slightly beneath the surface. Never let the powder sit directly against the plant stems or roots.
  • Water Immediately: Water the area thoroughly right after application to activate the nitrogen and help push the nutrients down to the root zone.
  • Risk of Leaf Burn: Be extremely cautious with dosing. Because it releases nitrogen rapidly, over-application can easily burn plant roots and foliage.
